Confessions of a real estate writer: Why those ads are so terrible
This could also have been titled “The Lies Agents Tell” but maybe we’ll save that one for a more appropriate topic. We can reasonably be generous and call this agent’s spin. If you have been looking for property in the slightly more salubrious suburbs, you will have noticed that what you used to understand to be a Townhouse (a two storey unit) has been morphing into a Townhome, Sounds much grander doesn’t it?
And you certainly don’t buy a flat anymore; its an apartment of course. When you are selling, you certainly want your property to sound as appealing as possible to prospective buyers. In fact sometimes sellers will get angry with agents and blame the lack of interest or offers on the description or possibly the photos (it’s nearly always price that dictates the success or otherwise of a campaign). So agents certainly feel a strong incentive to “spin” the description as positively as possible.
The following article opens the door to what agents really mean when they say “charmingly original” or the slightly more pretentious “Townhome” and provides an amusing insight. Just remember, it’s a home, not a house… Feelin the love.
